Something about Cats

Recently I was speaking to a friend who asked me what experiences you would have, t-being a cat care-giver, via-a-vis, a non cat-care-giver (by this I refer to caring for local cats in the broadest sense).

I have met many people who find it hard to understand why we have this fascination with cats. Hmm, should it even be called "fascination"? I would say that it's just more of an affinity towards cats. It's probably just like how different people like different things - stamps, watches, computers - whatever, just that for some, it's cats :D

Perhaps it's something about the way they are - they are endearing in their little ways, each have different spots, different patterns, different temperaments. They don't ask for too much, and they would be waitng for you to be back to give them food or just give a friendly pat and cuddle (though some would cringe at that!). And like one other friend was saying, they don't care if you are rich or poor. They don't pre-judge you on what you are not. Anyway, I guess this applies to all animals in general.

I always feel that our urban environment is getting too sterile without animals. Not that I support them being around and being homeless, but just that if they are already homeless (without another option of going to a home), then we should take care of them just like how we take care of the weak in our society, since they have already been short-changed in their lives - either because they are abandoned, or born on the streets.

I'm sure everyone who likes cats will have some interesting ideas about their cats. And it's real interesting to know friends who are afraid of cats, but would go all out still in supporting them in other ways, although not through direct care-giving :D

It's easy to forget sometimes why we are doing the things we are doing, so perhaps it's good to once in a while remind ourselves of OUR own reasons why we are helping the cats in our society.

Among all my friends (not inluding those friends i got to know in the course of my cat-loving adventures), I am the only one who has this fascination with cats. My friends have either gotten used to my so-called "weirdness" or accepted me for what I am. They are still very amused that i always carry some kibble with me wherever i go, even overseas or to a formal function. You never know when u will meet a hungry cat :-)

I always get one question - So how many cats do you have now? -meaning how many have I have adopted and how many more cats I am taking care of :) Now of course we have a visitor to wildbunch of 4. He has not decided to adopt us. I hope he does not as I think he has his own caregiver 3 blocks away as he is strong, healthy and neutered.
